Classic Car- Wind of Change

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

The term classic car is used to denote those cars which were manufactured before the year 1959. The exact definition is highly subjective as there are different set by different car manufacturers, critics, automobile clubs and associations across the world. Overall most of us consider old cars to be a part of a classic car collection.

It can be said that the cars manufactured between the Great Depression that took place in 1929 till the onset of a modern day or 1970s, covering the stint of World War 2 can be said to be the classic cars. These cars can be categorized in two groups- cars manufactured Before WWII or After WWII.

Before WW II, the most popular cars were the one that had inbuilt fenders and bodies were compact. However, during and after the war, sedan type cars with boots in rear gained popularity. As the war end was nearing, a new trend had hit the society. Cars like touring cars, phaetons and runabouts did not last long and were removed from the roads and that saw the end of year of classic car manufacture.

Gradually many new incorporations were made in the car body. Certain advancements in the field of technology took place. Some of these changes that came in this area were V8 flathead engine, front wheel transmission, all synchromesh gear box and many more. However, as the pre war era was closing, many car manufacturing companies were getting wiped out. It was so because some companies were taken over by the bigger names. This is a reason classic car is regarded as more expensive as well.

Some of the popular classic cars in the pre war era were, Alvis Speed 20, Alvis Speed 25, Ford V8, Bugatti Type 57, Citron Traction Avant, Volkswagen, and Rolls Royce Phantom III.

The Second World War influenced the then automobile industry. It is said that the second phase of classic cars begun after the end of the war. The end of war also marked the end of the period of the large gas sloshing automotive giants. This led to the beginning of grand tour vehicles, coupes and the sedans.

In this phase, requirement of family cars were felt. As a result, Ford Consul and Rover P4 were very popular cars during this phase. Beetle series by Volkswagen flooded the US and European market and had an immediate impact on common man. The unique shape and compact size helped it gain more popularity. It continued to reign the road till 2003 when finally Volkswagen chose to close down the manufacturing.

The popularity of family cars also led to the introduction of many small manufactures from other countries too like Japan. In the later years, these small companies gained tremendous popularity in the US and European markets too. Spacious Mini Model of the British Motor Corporation gained popular as another small car in Europe. This particular small car model proved to be for the small European streets.

The post war classic car era also saw the popularity of the high performance sports car rise. The Ferrari 250 series, V6-powered Aurelia from Lancia, Porsche’s 356 Roadstar blazed the roads of Europe.

Technical developments of classic car resulted in the form of inclusion of double wishbone suspension, uni-body shape; McPherson Strut suspension; twin V and boxer engines that took place in later years. To improve the performance of engines in terms of power and speed, upgradation and developments were also initiated from time to time.

Antique Classics – Cars That Last

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

The term Antique Classics is used in reference to old cars. According to Antique Automobile Club of America, an antique car is generally defined as a car over 25 years of age. However, the exact legal definition for the purpose of antique vehicle registration varies widely from State to State.

With about 12 years being the normal design life of modern cars, 25 years is about double and therefore a car that’s reached 25 is a rare survivor, and probably not economic to maintain as regular transportation.

The term Classic Car is often used synonymously with the term Antique car, but the formal definition of that term is restricted to specific high-quality vehicles from the pre-World War II era which began with the Great Depression in 1930 and ended with the recovery after World War II in 1948. The Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) defines the term Classic as a “fine” or “distinctive” automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. A Classic was high-priced when it was introduced and was built in very limited quantities. Although, by 1930′s most of the manufacturing technologies had already been invented, certain factors like including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories, such as power brakes, power clutch, and automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car can be considered a Classic.

Some exemplary pre-war Antique Classics are:

1. 1934-1940 Bugatti Type 57. The Type 57SC has become the singular classic car.

2. 1934 Citron Traction Avant. Has the distinction of being the first mass-produced front-wheel drive car,

3. 1936 MG T series, a sports car meant especially for American soldiers fighting in the war.

4. 1938 Volkswagen Beetle, the most-famous automobile of all times. It was a pre-war design that continues to exist even in the present times.

The CCCA Club keeps a thorough list of the vehicles they consider Classics, and while any member may petition for a vehicle to join the list, such applications are carefully scrutinized and very rarely is a new vehicle type admitted. They also acknowledge the fact that their rather exclusive definition of a classic car is by no means universally followed and hence they generally use terms such as “CCCA Classic” or the trademarked “Full Classic” to avoid confusion.

After 1930 the number of auto manufacturers came down sharply, as the industry consolidated, and developed after the war more advances in engine design were made, like the compression V8 engines and modern bodies from General Motors, Oldsmobile and Cadillac brands.

Why Indian Scout Motorcycles Gained Popularity

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

During 1920 Indian Motorcycle came out with a outstanding motorcycle which was called Indian Scout motorcycle and was used by everyone from police to motorcycle racer. This motorcycle which was in use till 1939 had a low frame and better handling. India was also producing engines for aircraft and motors for boats, air conditioner and cycles during World War II.

Indian Scout motorcycle had 37 cubic inch (596 cc) engine when it was first introduced in 1920. Later when popular American motorcycle Excelsior Super X was introduced with 45 cubic inches (745 cc) engine, Indian Scout also changed its engine to 45 cubic inch in 1927.

The 101 Scout was the second response which was being produced and some people felt that this was the highest in Indian Motorcycle technology. Another group of fans were pleased to see Indian motorcycle use the body of its other model Chief for the new Scout line which was introduced in 1931.

Perhaps to placate Scout devotees, from 1932 until 1941, smaller Scouts were built. They were known as the Scout Pony, the Junior Scout, and the Thirty-Fifty, all of which had 30.50 cubic inch engines.

In the early decades of the 20th century, the Indian Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson were the two alternatives for the classic American heavyweight cruiser. The two companies were fierce rivals, and this rivalry is chronicled in the book called The Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars by Allan Girdler. While the Scout was a runaway bestseller, Harley-Davidson proved to be a very formidable opponent.

There is some interesting informatios concerning the road worthiness of 1920 model of Scout motorcycle. The motorcycle racer Burt Munro set out to make a world record in speed on land with a Scout between 1962 and 1967. He succeeded in making an unbeatable record with under-1000cc. The amazing factor was when Munro made the record he was 68 years old riding a 47 years old motorcycle. There were some more examples and everything taken together was made into a movie named World’s Fastest Indian in 2005.

The company Indian Motorcycles faced a series of problems and was finally declared bankrupt in 1977. In 1935 controlling interest of Indian Motorcycles was sold and by 1946 it stopped manufacturing any motorcycle. After that till 1977 it changed hands several times. Through out 1980s and1990s the company was fighting court battles over the ownership of the brand name.

The claim of ownership came through in 1988 when IMCOA Licensing America won the trademark by the Federal court in Denver. A nine company multinational was set up to form Indian Motorcycle Company of America. From 1999 the manufacturing of Scout Motorcycles were started and carried on till 2003 when the company again had to announce bankruptcy.

In 2006, the company re-formed and set up shop in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Though the Chief model is being resurrected, the Indian Scout motorcycle is no longer made.

The Indian scout motorbike was a pioneer of it’s times. If you are a true Indian fan you’ll be interested in reading this page on Indian motorbike accessories.

Restoring Vintage Racing Cars

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

People have always liked to travel faster than walking pace and there have been competitions to see who can travel the fastest for as long as we can make out. The ancient Greeks had the Olympic Games, but there is no reason to suppose that this was the beginning of racing. In fact, it almost certainly was not. The fastest runners were used as messengers by the kings and their armies – how did they know who was the fastest? – then horseback racing and chariot races in the Arena, then bicycles and cars.

Individuals have always raced and there have always been those who want to be the fastest. Racing is still extremely well-supported and racing cars is one of the most well-liked forms of it. Car racing has been a sport since the end of the Nineteenth Century, although in those early days, most car races took the form of racing from city to city similar to the Tour de France or the Milk Race for cyclists.

Car aficionados have many types of race meetings nowadays. There are: the Formula one, Formula D, Stock Car, Drag Car, Rallies, Le Mans, NASCAR and Indy 500 races and they are all extremely popular.

However, back to those early days of rally-style vintage car racing. The cars were what we would call stock cars. In other words, anyone with enough money could go to a showroom, buy a car and enter a race. In reality, the only people who could afford a car were wealthy and the same is still the case today. It costs millions to run a racing team.

From the family car, racing drivers started to prefer to drive specialist, single-seated vehicles and the idea of the contemporary Formula One car was born. However, racing cars at the top level of competition do not have a long working life. They are continually being replaced by faster, more powerful or more streamlined models.

These out-moded racing cars are mothballed for a while to protect secrets and then they are sold on. Many of these racing cars have earned a position in history and therefore also a place in a museum. They are usually very costly, but at least you do get the opportunity to stand next to these legendary vehicles and feel some of the glory that they won being reflected back towards you.

Some aficionados are so impressed that they want to buy their own vintage racing car. A fully restored vintage car like this would be quite expensive, but you might be able to pick one up reasonably if you can restore it yourself. This is simpler than it once was because you can track down the vehicle, spares or a replacement parts manufacturer on the Net.

When buying a vintage racing car, the provenance, the history, of the car is vital both to its interest and its value. Therefore, you ought to do all you can to verify the vehicle’s history before you purchase it. The more research you do on a potential purchase the less opportunity you have of being sold a counterfeit.
